It’s walkable, historic, and puts the restaurants, plazas, and nightlife at your front door, and it’s where Cartagena’s colonial villas with courtyards and rooftops are. Bocagrande is the modern beachfront district of high-rise condos and hotels about 10 minutes away by taxi: closer to the sand, quieter at night, and more familiar if you want a beach-resort feel. Bachelor and bachelorette groups, friends’ trips, and first-time visitors almost always choose the Old City; families who prioritize daily beach access sometimes prefer Bocagrande. It can be, depending on where you stay. Streets around Plaza Santo Domingo, Plaza de los Coches, and Calle del Arsenal in Getsemaní stay lively until 2–3 a.m. on Thursday to Saturday, with music from bars and rooftop villas. San Diego, in the northern corner of the walls, is noticeably quieter, and villas built around an interior courtyard are insulated from the street even in the busiest blocks. If your group wants to be near the nightlife, El Centro or Getsemaní is the right pick; if you want to sleep early with kids or older guests, tell us and we’ll steer you toward San Diego or a courtyard property.

Sometimes, but never assume it.
